Reproductions of letters from both my grandmothers and my mother telling about their first menstruation. 9 pieces total.
While doing some research on menstruation some years ago, I asked my maternal grandmother about the first time she got her period. I suggested that she write me a letter with her experience. That gave me the idea to also ask my mother and my paternal grandmother to write me their experiences.
I especifically asked them to share with me what they knew about menstruation at that time, how old they were, how did they find out about it, if there was anything that was prohibited or any other curious thing that they remembered from those days…
This is part of a current project I’m working now with the support of the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance (NoMAA) Grant, and will be ready at the end of 2009.
