Many people have never thought about what Design really is and how it affects our life. Open your eyes and take a very good look around you. Everything you see has been designed. Every little thing. Some things are better designed than others. Unfortunately, too many things are designed by people who have no clue...
Now, about Graphic Design. Before the internet and multimedia, a Graphic Designer dwelved mostly in printed materials and it was a very specialized trade. Now, anyone can print a high-quality brochure on their own desktops. Alas, by "high-quality" I meant high print quality... I turns out that it is still a very specialized trade...
A good Graphic Designer has a lot to know about: typography, printing, color and composition of course. But also something about programming, physics, chemistry and even psychology... and to top it off, we have to know everything there is to know about your product. If it's packaged, we have to know how it is distributed, who uses it, who chooses to buy it, etc. If it's a magazine, we have to know who reads it, how and where they buy it, etc, etc.
Of course all this also applies to website design, plus the added complexities of interactivity, database queries, programming languages, web-browsers limitations, etc.
