The layering of light, time, memory and the place they intersect are the elements with which I work. I am drawn to a place of isolation and ambiguity. A space in which the lack of control that I have is both daunting as well as liberating.
I am currently making images using an early technique called the Ambrotype process. Stepping back in time, I have become an alchemist mixing up emulsions that I laboriously coat on to each glass plate, and similar to that of an 18th century Polaroid, shoot until I am satisfied with the image. Perched delicately on top of thin glass plates, this image can seem fragile, perhaps fleeting. There is something intangible in these images, as if with a blink they could disappear.
Since producing ambrotypes, I have taken a step closer to fulfilling my ongoing concerns. Through exploring the ambrotype process I try balancing references to the nostalgic, while creating images that achieve an ambiguity of timelessness. It is from this place that I continue to work at making photographs able to swing between temporal boundaries.
